Veganism is the practice of refraining from using products of animal origin, seeking to exclude, as far as possible, the use of any product of animal origin, whether in food or clothing. A follower of this practice is known as a vegan. Vegans do not consume animal foods, such as meat (including fish, mollusks and insects), dairy products, eggs and honey – in addition to avoiding animal-derived materials, products tested on animals and places that use animals for entertainment. Although the vegan diet and the principle of non-exploitation of animals were defined in the founding of the Vegan Society in 1944, Leslie J. Cross, in 1949, felt that society lacked a definition more linked to “animal rights”, demanding from its strict adherence to these terms, “the principle of emancipation of animals from exploitation by man”. This was later defined as “seeking to end the use of animals by man for food, goods, work, hunting, vivisection and any other uses involving the exploitation of animal life by man”.
